Watford is the largest town in Hertfordshire which is north
of London.
Berkhamstead to the west of the county was were King Harold
successor, Edgar Aetheling finally surrendered to William
the Conqueror.
The third largest roman town was Verulamium which today
has developed into st Albans.
To the south of the county Elstree film studios is the home
to shows such as 'are you smarter than a ten year old?', Big
Brother, Holby city and Eastenders. Major motion pictures
such as star wars and raiders of the lost ark have also been
filmed at Elstree.
Other major towns and citys in Hertfordshire include Bishops
Stortford, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Potters Bar,
Party, Radlett, Rickmansworth, Royston, Stevenage, Tring,
Ware and Welwyn Garden City.
Some famous faces
Brian Johnston was the voice of cricket on BBC television
and radio for nearly 50 years. Brian was born at Little Berkhamsted,
Hertfordshire in 1912.
Esther Rantzen also born in Berkhampsted 1940 and joined the
BBC in the mid sixties she went on to present popular consumer
affairs program that’s life. From the mid 1970’s
to 1980 Easther presented TV show ‘The big time’
it was on this show 80s pop star Sheena Easton had her first
big break.
Francis de la Tour was born in Bovingdon Hertfordshire 1944.
Star of stage and screen has appeared in numerous roles including
as Miss Jones in rising damp, and more recently as the giant
headmistress of Beaux batons Academy in the Harry potter film.
Guy Ritchie was born 1968 in Hatfield Guy is a writer and
director of films such as lock stock and snatch.
Jennie Bond journalists, royal correspondent and television
presenter was born 1950 in Hitchin.
Lewis Hamilton born in Stevenage Herts in 1985. Before formula
one Lewis made a name for himself as a go cart champion by
the age of ten.
Michael Portillo came from Bushey in Hertfordshire. The former
MP for Southgate in Enfield was also famous in the sixties
for advertising Ribena.
Simon Le Bon also from Bushey, Simon was born in 1958 and
was the lead singer of the 1980s
pop music band Duran Duran. The name Duran Duran comes
from a 1960s science fiction film Barbarella.
Victoria Beckham lived in Geoff’s Oak, back in the
mid 90s the cousin of the author worked in swimming pool maintenance.
The cousin regularly cleaned Victoria's family pool and was
told by Victories mum ‘Jackie’ about a new band
her daughter was going to be in. She told him if he fancied
a bet, bet on the band having a number one single. He did
not do this and is still cleaning pools.
Vinnie Jones, footballs hard man was born in Watford. Now
more famous for his film rolls than football.
Terry Scott also a Watford boy was born in 1927 and was
a much loved comedy star of many British film and TV shows.
He appeared in several carry on films such as carry on Henry
and Khyber and most famously stared along side June Whitfield
in Terry and June. Terry also provided the voice of penfold
in dangermouse and was the curly wurly kid back in the 1970s.
Michael Bentine another king of comedy was also born in
Watford 1922. Michel had an alternative approach to comedy
and stared along side spike Milligan and Sir Harry Secombe
in the Goon show, as well as kids show potty time.
